Camp Talahi Open House
Please mark your calendars you are invited to visit Camp Talahi April 19, 2008 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. to meet summer staff and volunteers, check out the camp facility, enjoy a guided tour of camp and trails and share memories, learn what’s new and register for Summer Camp!
The third Michigan Conference VISION Hurricane Recovery Worktrip to New Orleans will be April 27 - May 2, 2008. The cost is $250 per person and includes meals, lodging and a dontation to Hurricane Recovery for materials.
Ten adult volunteers are needed to travel to New Orleans as part of a Michigan Conference Work Trip to help with the recovery after Hurricane Katrina. The group will arrive in New Orleans the evening of April 27and depart new Orleans on Saturday morning May 3. We will be working with United Church of Christ Disaster Recovery Services.
Currently, there are spaces for ten volunteers at a time to work in the area of the UCC New Orleans Association. Individuals and couples are welcome to participate with the Michigan Conference Work Group. Cots and twin size air beds are provided so plan to bring twin size sheets or sleeping bag and a pillow. Laundry facilities are on site. There are kitchen facilities available on site. We will shop for and prepare our own meals.
Each group will work closely with a project manager who will assist with arranging and resourcing the work projects. Our focus will be on clean-up and repair of UCC churches and members homes. Specific information about our work will be available as we get closer to our arrival time. In general, volunteers should plan to bring their own surgical gloves, work gloves, dust masks and garbage bags. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts are good. Up to date Hepatitis A and Tetanus vaccines are highly recommended.
The Michigan Group will be meeting together on April 5, 2008. At this meeting we will have an opportunity to meet our co-workers, important information about our work trip experience and more information about the nature of the work we will be doing. We will also coordinate travel arrangements.
