VISION and Camp Talahi

Ten adult volunteers are needed to travel to New Orleans as part of a Michigan Conference Work Trip to help with the recovery after Hurricane Katrina. The group will arrive in New Orleans the evening of April 27and depart new Orleans on Saturday morning May 3. We will be working with United Church of Christ Disaster Recovery Services.  

Your service will not only assist in the physical acts of helping people rebuild their homes, but is an act of presence that indicates the commitment to walk beside people as they seek to rebuild their lives. Together, we can be the body of Christ in the world.

 Currently, there are spaces for ten volunteers at a time to work in the area of the UCC New Orleans Association. Individuals and couples are welcome to participate with the Michigan Conference Work Group. Cots and twin size air beds are provided so plan to bring twin size sheets or sleeping bag and a pillow. Laundry facilities are on site.    There are kitchen facilities available on site. We will shop for and prepare our own meals. 

Each group will work closely with a project manager who will assist with arranging and resourcing the work projects. Our focus will be on clean-up and repair of UCC churches and members homes. Specific information about our work will be available as we get closer to our arrival time. In general, volunteers should plan to bring their own surgical gloves, work gloves, dust masks and garbage bags. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts are good. Up to date Hepatitis A and Tetanus vaccines are highly recommended.

 Remember, disaster recovery work groups may be quite different from other kinds of mission trips. Living conditions will be bare-bones and work projects for any particular week may not be known ahead of time. Flexibility and patience are key for the success of your experience.
